Who owns the material on this site, how to ask to use it, and how to report a use of your own work.
What the foundation owns
The text, graphics, logos, audio, data and software on this website belong to the Lu Memorial Foundation or to the people who supplied them to us, and they are protected by United States and international copyright law. So is the compilation: the selection and arrangement of the material, as well as the material itself. The photographs are the one exception, and the next section says so.
The foundation's name, its logo, and the names of its programs are trademarks of the foundation or its affiliates. Using them needs our written permission first.
The photographs are not ours
The photographs on this site belong to the people who made them. Nobody supplied them to the foundation: each one is published under a free licence that lets anyone use it, and we use it on those terms like anyone else.
Every photograph carries its author and its licence in the credit line printed under it. That licence, and not this page, governs what you may do with the photograph. Some of them ask you to credit the author and to pass the same licence on. We cannot give or withhold permission for any of them, and you do not need ours.
Asking to use something
Write to contact@lu-memorial.org and tell us:
- your name and your organisation;
- how to reach you;
- which material you want to use;
- what you want to use it for;
- where it will appear, and for how long.
Quoting this site for criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship or research is generally fair use and needs no permission from us. Anything beyond that does, except the photographs, which are covered by their own licences.
Reporting a use of your own work
The foundation has designated an agent to receive notice of claimed copyright infringement in the lu-memorial.org domain, and follows the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. If you believe your work is being infringed on one of our sites, write to contact@lu-memorial.org or telephone (320) 364-4860, and include all of the following. A notice missing any of it takes us longer to act on.
- A description of the work you say is infringed. If several works at one site are involved, a representative list of them is enough.
- A description of the material you say infringes it, and enough detail for us to find it.
- Your address, telephone number and email address.
- A statement that you believe in good faith that the use is not authorised by you, your agent, or the law.
- A statement, signed under penalty of perjury, that your notice is accurate and that you are authorised to act for the copyright owner.
- Your physical or electronic signature.
We end the site privileges of anyone who repeatedly infringes the copyright of others, once the owner or the owner's agent has told us.
