What we collect when you use this site or apply for the scholarship, who reads it, and how to reach us about it.
What this policy covers
This policy covers the Lu Memorial Foundation: this website, the scholarship application, the mailing list, and the messages you send us. It is the policy that governs your information. The application portal is operated by Goal Get It!, which administers the application for us and has a policy of its own; where the two disagree about what we collect or who reads it, this one applies. The policies page links to both.
What we collect
When you apply, we collect what the application asks for:
- your name, address, email address, and phone number;
- where you go to school or plan to enrol, your program, your status, and your transcript;
- how you spend your time each week, including paid work and family responsibilities;
- your written responses, and the optional video link if you send one;
- what your recommender writes about you, which you do not see and we do not send you;
- the household, income, and cost information described in the next section.
When you write to us, join the mailing list, or send us a message, we collect what you type and the address you send it from. When you read this site, our host records ordinary request data such as your IP address and your browser version. We do not run advertising trackers and we do not sell anything about you.
Household, income, and cost information
The 2027 application asks about money. We are writing this section down plainly because it is the most sensitive information this foundation holds, and because you should be able to decide whether to answer before you start.
What we ask for. How many people are in your household and who supports you. Your household’s approximate income, in any currency, as a figure you estimate rather than one you look up. Whether your household receives public assistance. Whether your housing has been stable. Whether anyone depends on you. How many hours a week you work for pay and how many you spend on family responsibilities. What one year of your education costs, and what you already have toward it from grants, loans, family, and your own earnings.
Why we ask. The award is $5,000, and we select the applicants for whom that amount changes what happens next. We cannot do that without knowing what a year costs you and what is already covered. An approximate answer is enough. We do not check your figures against anyone else’s records.
Who reads it. The selection committee reads your application, including this part of it. Nobody at your school, your employer, or any government agency sees it because you applied. We do not publish it, and we do not report it to anyone.
One document, and only if you are a finalist. While we are reading applications we ask nobody for a document. If you become a finalist, we ask for one document that supports what you told us about your costs. Any one of these counts: an aid award letter, a funding or assistantship offer letter, a FAFSA Submission Summary, a bursar or financial aid office letter, a meal-eligibility letter, a counselor letter, or a signed statement from a school official or employer. One staff member at the Goal Get It! Lu Office of Financial Aid reads it. The selection committee does not see it.
What we never ask for. We never ask you for tax returns, bank statements, Social Security numbers, passport numbers, or other government identification numbers. If a message claiming to come from us asks you for any of those, it is not from us. Forward it to privacy@lu-memorial.org.
If you would rather not answer. Leaving a money question blank does not disqualify you, and it does not count against you. It does mean we have less to go on when we work out what the award would change for you. You may also write to privacy@lu-memorial.org with a question about this section before you apply, and we will answer it.
How we use your information
We use what you send us to:
- read and select applications;
- reach you about your application and, if you are selected, about your award;
- send you the mailing list, if you asked for it;
- answer the message you sent us;
- report counts, such as how many people applied and how many awards we made, in figures that name nobody;
- meet a legal or accounting obligation.
Who else sees it
The application portal at apply.goalgetit.org is operated by Goal Get It!, which processes applications on our behalf. The mailing list form and the contact form on this site are Google Forms, so Google receives and stores what you type into them. Our website host receives ordinary request data. Each of these handles your information for us and for no purpose of its own.
We do not sell your information, rent it, or hand it to anyone for marketing. We may disclose information when the law requires it, to comply with a subpoena or court order, or to defend a legal claim.
Cookies
This website does not set advertising or tracking cookies. The application portal and the embedded Google Forms set their own cookies, which are covered by their operators’ policies. You can refuse cookies in your browser; if you do, the embedded forms may stop working.
How long we keep it
We keep an application for as long as we need it to run the selection, answer a question about a decision, and meet our accounting and reporting obligations. After that we keep only the counts, which name nobody. Mailing list entries are kept until you unsubscribe. If you want your application removed sooner, ask us at privacy@lu-memorial.org; we will tell you what we can delete and what we are required to keep.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you may ask us for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, object to how we use it, or unsubscribe from the mailing list. Write to privacy@lu-memorial.org. We answer in writing. Asking about your information does not affect how your application is read, and we do not tell the selection committee that you asked.
Applicants under 13
This site is not aimed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child sent us something, write to privacy@lu-memorial.org and we will delete it.
Where your information is held
We are based in the United States, and so are our portal operator and our host. If you apply from another country, your information is transferred to and held in the United States, where the data protection rules are not the same as your own country’s. Applying is how you agree to that transfer.
Security
We limit who can open an application to the people who read them, and our portal operator and host hold the data under their own security controls. No system is proof against every attack, so we do not promise one. If we learn of a breach affecting applicants, we will say so on this site and write to the people affected.
Other sites we link to
This site links to sites we do not run, including the application portal and the Google Forms. What you send them is covered by their policies, not by this one.
Changes to this policy
When we change this policy we update the reviewed date at the foot of this page. If a change affects what we collect from applicants, we will say so on the site before the application opens.
